Walnut Council To Consider Naming Bridge For Officer Orozco

Tonight (Thursday), the Walnut City Council will be considering a resolution to designate the bridge over Interstate 80 on Antique City Drive as the Officer Karie Orozco Memorial Bridge. If approved, the council would place a signs with the designation. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) would have to provide prior approval for placement at the interstate exits. The resolution was approved by the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday evening. Orozco, a 29-year-old police officer with the Omaha Police Department, was a native of Walnut and graduated from Walnut High School in 2014. She was the first woman in the department to be killed in the line of duty on May 20, 2015, when convicted felon, Marcus Wheeler, shot at officers who were trying to arrest him. Wheeler was also killed in the incident. Orozco was just one day away from taking delayed maternity leave to care for her premature daughter
