Veteran’s Suicide Under Review By Office Of Inspector General

A recent request made by Iowa Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst and Wisconsin Senator, Ron Johnson, for a review of the suicide of a veteran who was allegedly turned away from Iowa Department Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City has been received by the Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The office confirmed yesterday (Thursday) that they are reviewing the incident. Grassley said this is a good example of why we have independent watchdogs at federal agencies. In tragic instances like this one, Grassley said, an independent review is crucial to ensuring the VA and Congress are better informed to give veterans the care they need and deserve. The case brought forward for review says that 33-year-old Brandon Ketchum of Davenport, a veteran of the Marine Corps and Army National Guard was turned away for treatment on July 7, and committed suicide 24 hours later.
