Two Semis Involved In Accident Near Scranton Tuesday

There was an estimated $50,000 in damages done when two semis collided yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon at the intersection of Elm and Locust Streets south of Scranton. At approximately 3:39 p.m., the Iowa State Patrol and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded to find a 1994 Peterbilt truck-trailer, driven by Travis Edwin Shannon of Lorimar, was westbound on Elm Street and stopped at the stop sign posted at the intersection. A 2000 Freightliner semi-trailer, driven by 40-year-old Benjamin Paul Matteson of Guthrie Center, was northbound and signaling a right-hand turn. Matteson told authorities he had not intended to turn at Elm Street, but was planning to turn right a block north at Moulton Street instead. When Shannon saw the turn signal, he started to pull out into the intersection and into the path of the Freightliner. Shannon’s truck was hit broadside. Neither driver was wearing a seat belt, but no injuries were reported at that time. There was an estimated $25,000 in damages to the Peterbilt, owned by Sickles Trucking of Greenfield, and $25,000 to the Freightliner, owned by Iowa Energy Farms of Minnetonka, Minn. Both drivers were cited for failure to maintain or use safety belts.
