Travel In Area Small Towns Seeing Some Changes

Getting around small town Iowa has always posed an interesting problem, and many residents have taken to using golf-carts to travel the city streets. Sac City and Glidden are both seeing increased numbers of non-automobile. Sac City Administrator, Adam Ledford, says the city amended their laws to allow for this kind of use seven years ago.

After years of golf carts driving around town, concerns about their safe operation and the individuals driving the carts received some attention from city officials.

At Tuesday’s Sac City Council meeting, the first reading of the proposed new ordinance was completed to inform the public of the upcoming changes. Glidden residents have been faced with a similar issue. Suzy Danner, Glidden City Clerk, says their problem is not with golf carts, but with utility vehicles like John Deere’s Gators.

Glidden is still waiting to introduce the ordinance change to the council, and Danner says there is still time for residents to voice their thoughts.

Both Danner and Ledford say their primary concern is for public safety and just want to address the issues before an accident happens. Neither city has passed an ordinance change and welcome comments or questions from their residents.
