Three Iowa State Cyclone football players on spring break completely disregarded their own safety to save a young woman’s life after witnessing her car launch into Laguna Madre Bay at approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. Anthony Lazard and Jack Spreen, both 23, along with 19-year-old Joe Doran were sitting on the third floor balcony in South Padre Island, Texas, near the 1700 block of Laguna Blvd. when they witnessed a black car drive past them and into the bay. They ran to the shoreline, jumped into the water and swam to the sinking vehicle. Twenty-two-year-old Luisa Maria Castro was in the car, kicking at the windshield in an effort to escape. Spreen said they attempted to break the driver’s side window without success. The three young men then focused on the windshield and were able to break a hole where damage had occurred, pulling the woman out of the car. South Padre Island Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and witnessed the rescue. Officer Michael Schlitz credits the actions of the three young men for saving the woman’s life. “That car completely sank in less than a minute,” Schlitz said. “If not for them jumping into the water and pulling her out, she most certainly would have drowned.”
