The EPA Is Reminding Homeowners To Check Their Septic Tanks During SepticSmart Week

Next Monday marks the beginning of Septic Smart Week, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants to help you save money and protect the environment at the same time. Federal, state and local governments and private sector groups are joining with the EPA to promote septic tank awareness and the harm a tank failure can cause. More than 26 million homes in the U.S. depend on septic systems to treat wastewater, and if not maintained properly, they can contaminate groundwater and harm the environment by releasing bacteria, viruses and household chemicals, not to mention the high cost of septic tank repair. The EPA recommends homeowners follow a few simple steps to keep their septic tank operational. Have your septic tank inspected every three years by a qualified professional and remember to have them pumped when necessary, typically every three to five years. Avoid pouring fats, grease and solids down the sink to prevent clogs farther down the line. Do not flush things down the toilet that do not belong like coffee grounds or cigarette butts. Monitor your water use and spread it out throughout the day to prevent overloading the system and causing a spill. Remind guests to avoid unnecessary pressure on the septic system by not parking or driving over the drain field to prevent damage to pipes. By following these simple guidelines, homeowners can save themselves money by avoiding septic repairs and keep our water quality high.
