Senate Honors Fallen Police Officer During National Police Week

Sunday, May 15, marked the first day of National Police Week and the United States Senate laid the groundwork for recognizing the sacrifices made by these men and women. Late last week, Senators Deb Fisher and Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Iowa Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst introduced a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Officer Kerrie Orozco, an Iowa native who was killed in the line of duty while working for the Omaha Police Department. Orozco, who was killed on May 20, 2015, while serving an arrest warrant, was a shining example of what it means to serve a community. “Whether volunteering at area youth organizations, or putting on a badge to protect and serve, she was and continues to be an important role model of what community is all about,” Grassley said. Orozco was the first female to die in the line of duty while serving with the Omaha Police Department. She was killed one day before she was scheduled to bring her three-month-old daughter, Olivia, home from the hospital and to begin her postponed maternity leave.
