Semi Rollover Accident Near Churdan Kills 19 Hogs

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Churdan Fire and Rescue responded to the scene of a single-vehicle, semi tractor-trailer rollover accident at approximately 5:30 a.m. Friday morning near Churdan. Twenty-seven-year-old Jacob Bieret of Wall Lake was traveling south on Highway 4, and entered the curve near Churdan at too high a rate of speed, causing his load of 150 hogs to shift to one side of the trailer. The uneven weight distribution forced the vehicle into the south ditch where it rolled over, coming to rest on the passenger side. Churdan Fire and Rescue utilized a rescue saw to cut open the trailer to release the hogs, which were quickly transferred into another trailer. Bieret was not injured, but 19 hogs were killed in the accident. Bieret has been charged with failure to maintain control. There was an estimated $100,000 in damages to the 2015 Peterbuilt tractor and 2015 Wilson trailer, which is owned by Scharn Trucking of Nemaha.
