Scholarships For High School Seniors To Honor Environmentalist

High school seniors have an opportunity to win one of five $1,000 scholarships from Keep Iowa Beautiful (KIB). The scholarship was founded in memory of Robert Byers, a teacher and environmentalist dedicated to young people and conservational concerns. “KIB seeks to foster positive values in younger generations and reinforce them in older generations. We encourage respect for home, neighborhood, community and state,” said Gerry Schnepf, KIB Executive Director. “KIB serves as a key resource for educating youth on the importance of environmental stewardship and community betterment,” says Schnepf. The Byers Environmental Scholarship Fund was created in 2009 to encourage students to take an interest in the environment and community service. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must plan to enroll in an Iowa college or university to study environmental science, community development, landscape architecture or architecture or community planning and sustainability. Applications are due early next year on Jan. 7, and winners will be notified in March. Award recipients will be invited to attend a ceremony at the Governor’s Office in Des Moines in April.
