Schleswig Standoff Ends After Suspect Is Shot

SCHLESWIG, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a man who fired a shot during a western Iowa standoff has been wounded by a deputy. The Iowa Division of Public Safety says in a news release that Crawford County sheriff’s deputies were sent around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday to check on the man at a Schleswig apartment. The deputies say the man pointed a rifle at them and threaten to shoot. Deputies evacuated nearby residents and summoned negotiators. The release says the man opened his apartment door around 11:45 p.m., pointed a rifle toward officers and fired once. A Crawford County deputy returned fire, hitting the man. He was flown to a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, and was expected to survive. His name hasn’t been released. Schleswig is a Crawford County city of about 880 residents.
