Scammers con elderly Sac County resident out of $80,000

Officials with the Sac County Sheriff’s Office are investigating following a report of a Publisher’s Clearing House scam which was reported on Wednesday, March 30. The victim, an elderly resident of Early, was purportedly scammed out of $80,000 dollars within just the last week. The person told authorities that scammers promised they’d receive over a million dollar payout plus a car.

Sac County Sheriff, Ken McClure says, “These cases are very hard to investigate. Often times, the address, names, and numbers used to make these contacts are fake and computer generated which makes it impossible to track suspects.” He adds there are some general rules of thumb to follow if you think you may be getting scammed: never send money to get money, if it sounds too good to be true then it’s probably a scam, and never disclose personal information about yourself or your finances to anyone on the internet or over the phone.
