Sac County Conservation Holding Seminar So Citizens Can Get Involved In Avian Science Project

Keeping an accurate count of wildlife is important to keep our bird populations thriving, and the Sac County Conservation Board (SCCB) is asking for your help to obtain those numbers. On Monday, Dec. 19, the SCCB is holding a seminar to explain how to contribute to this citizen science program at 6 p.m. at the Sac County Conservation Building in Hagge Park near Sac City. This event has become a holiday staple for years to many environmentalists, according to naturalist, Megan Cook.

The bird count lasts for several weeks from Dec. 14 to Jan. 5, but Cook has one big day for bird watchers to get involved. She says people unfamiliar with bird counts can come to her seminar to learn how they can help out on that big day.

The numbers, after being collected, are then sent to data compilers to be used by scientists studying bird populations and migrations. The Audubon Bird Watch event takes place across all areas of Iowa, and Carroll County Conservation is holding their count on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 a.m. in Swan Lake State Park, and Sac County holds theirs on Jan. 2. Information on how to get involved in the count can be found below this story.
