Prepare Homes For Cold Temperatures Despite Unusual Warmth

Wednesday, Dec. 21, marked the first official day of winter and experienced some unseasonably warm weather. Despite temperatures well above average, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) is reminding homeowners that the coldest days of the year are still ahead, and some simple tips can keep your home and family ready. Freezing temperatures brings the risk of burst pipes. Insulating pipes with foam costs as little as one dollar per six inches and can save thousands in repair costs. To keep your family safe in the event of an extended power outage, keep flashlights, a radio and batteries on hand. Stay warm by wearing layers of loose fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one heavy layer like a winter coat. Keep several days of non-perishable food on hand to avoid running out when conditions prevent it. One gallon of water per person per day for emergencies will help avoid water shortages. These tips can prevent major problems during the winter season. A full guide on preparing for the cold weather can be found by following the link included with this story on our website.
