Petroleum Industry Lobbies For Repeal Of Renewable Fuel Standard

The American Petroleum Institute has been lobbying for Congress to repeal or significantly reform the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Director, Frank Macciarola, says the RFS is a broken and outdated policy that does not work for consumers and he believes a growing number of Congress members are agreeing that the program is a failure. Macciarola says leaders are beginning to listen to the Americans who are saying they do not want higher ethanol blends in their vehicles.

Macciarola says that up to 90 percent of vehicles on the road are not designed for E15. Automakers warn that use of these higher-ethanol fuels in non-approved vehicles will void warranties. He also claims they are responsible for higher prices at the pump.

The American Petroleum Institute urges policy makers to put consumer interests above the ethanol industry interests and repeal the standard.
