Northey Responds To Weekly Crop Report

After the release of the weekly Iowa crop report Monday by the USDA National Agricultural Statistical Service, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, said recent rains are timely in light of an extended period of high temperatures that are expected through the week. “In general, crops remain in good condition with 81 percent of corn and 80 percent of soybeans rated in good or excellent condition,” Northey said. The report for the week ending Sunday, July 17, showed a statewide average of 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork, however some areas saw damage to crops and buildings from high winds and hail. Sixty-seven percent of the corn crop has now reached the silking stage, soybeans blooming reached 66 percent and soybeans setting pods reached 20 percent.
