New Hunting License Temporarily Bypasses Hunter Education Courses

In mid-July, a new hunting license that provides the ability to bypass hunter education courses was offered for sale to anyone 16 and older. This is meant to encourage residents and out of state visitors who missed hunter education when they were 12, and who are now in their 20s and 30s to give hunting a try. If they like hunting dove or small game, they can then get registered into a hunter education program to continue to be eligible to hunt. These apprentice licenses include a habitat fee and are available to residents for $30 and to non-residents for $123. There must be one licensed adult mentor hunter for each apprentice hunter and the license can be purchased up to two times without having completed a hunter education course. The license meets the requirements for pursuit of small game, as well as those for hunting deer, turkey and waterfowl. A person hunting with an apprentice license must shoot and tag their own deer or turkey.
