Musical Inspiration Driving Therapy Fundraising At MRHC

Music has long held a nearly mystical power over all humans. From the very first notes of a song, we can be transported to another time and place; to a lifetime of memories, some sad, but many times it brings back the most joyful moments of our lives. Neuroscientist Dr. Oliver Sacks has been using these positive attributes of music in treating the elderly and those with dementia through music therapy. In his documentary, “Alive Inside,” Sacks details his work and results, which in some cases brought non-vocal individuals to suddenly awaken and come alive. Sacks work and the foundation he has started called “Music and Memory” caught the attention of Manning Regional Healthcare Center’s Certified Physician Assistant, Nate Fuller. Fuller said watching the documentary and seeing people with little-to-no quality of life suddenly begin to sing and dance was truly touching and inspiring. He knew at that moment he wanted to work to bring a program such as this one to the residents of the Plaza long-term care facility. He has already initiated fundraising efforts for a “Remember the Music” program at the MRHC Plaza and has raised $500 towards his $3,000 goal. Funds raised will be used to purchase iPods, headphones, music and computers to create personalized playlists and listening capabilities for each resident.
