Missioners Working To Raise Money For Next Aid Trip To Honduras

Last year, Kuemper Middle School instructor and now Faith Coordinator, Mike McCarty, took an eye-opening and heart-warming trip to a third-world country as part of the Gehlen Catholic Mission Honduras charitable initiative. He was so moved by the experience that he came back with the goal of creating a Kuemper-based mission of students and adults to travel to Honduras to provide housing and basic necessities. McCarty said there has already been a lot of interest in the trip scheduled for March 29 through April 7, 2017.

McCarty said the 10-day trip allowed them to be immersed in the culture and to see just how appreciative the people of Honduras were for everything that was done for them. The mission goal for the students is to teach them the value of service and to have them return to their communities and become a part of giving back and helping their fellow man.

Although March is several months away, McCarty says they are already urging the students and adults planning on taking the trip to begin getting immunized and to gather together for team-building experiences. They are also working hard on raising money to help pay for the supplies and necessities they will take with them to Honduras.

The second fundraiser will take place Sunday, Oct. 16, with a brunch at Dolly’s Bar and Grill in Auburn. From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., all proceeds will go back to Mission Honduras. McCarty said he will also be working to organize his annual Dodge Ball Tournament later this year to raise more funds for the project. The mission students and adults are all selling raffle tickets and the group will be on hand at the Kuemper vs. East Sac County football game Friday, Oct. 14. Tickets can also be purchased through McCarty by calling 790-2206 or 775-2170. Tickets will be available until Monday Oct. 17, and the drawing will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18.
