Lightning Strike Results In Brief Off-Air Time For CBC Stations

Earlier today (Tuesday) some storms rolled through the Carroll area and left more than just a little rain. Lightning strikes left one of the Carroll Broadcasting Company (CBC) towers without power. As a result, 1380 KCIM, 93.7 KKRL and KICK 106.7 were off the air for a short time. KCIM was off the air for less than half an hour, but 93.7 KKRL and KICK 106.7 both took more than hour to restore power to the broadcasting sites. Signals travel from our studios to the KKRL tower south of Carroll and are relayed on to the KIKD broadcast tower just west of Lidderdale. The lack of power prevented the 106.7 signal relaying to the KIKD tower and resulted in the station going off air even though that location had power. These lightning strikes did not directly connect with any of the broadcast towers, and our engineers report no damage to any of the towers. CBC Engineer, Bob Grote, believes that lightning struck a power line or pole and resulted in the power outage. KKRL and KIKD had power and signals returned less than an hour and half after the initial issue.
