Tuesday, April 12, the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs will recognize volunteers in a special ceremony at 1 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, which is 10 miles west of Des Moines at the Van Meter exit off Interstate 80. Organizers wish to celebrate National Volunteer Week by thanking the many volunteer organizations and individuals who dedicate their time and efforts to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Special guests include Gov. Terry Branstad and Bishop Richard E. Pates of the Des Moines Diocese. Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs Executive Director, Colonel Robert King, extends an invitation and encourages the public to recognize those who have extended themselves to create and maintain the hallowed grounds of the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.
