Iowa Senate District 6 Candidates Talk Minimum Wage And School Funding

The Carroll Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum was held Wednesday night, and the two candidates vying for the Iowa Senate District 6 seat were in attendance to answer questions from potential voters. Nick Serianni, a Libertarian, is up against Republican incumbent, Mark Segebart. A major issue facing rural areas is school districts consolidating to cut costs, and a question was asked concerning their plans to strengthen our schools. Segabart says making transportation more efficient would help with that issue.

Serianni believes keeping tax money in the state system rather than sending it away is the answer.

Recently, Polk County approved a 3-year minimum wage increase. The senate candidates were asked if this minimum decision should be taken to the state legislature. Segebart believed that minimum wage is an issue that should be handle by the state.

Serianni said there are too many variables to set a single minimum wage across the entire state, and that would negatively impact businesses.

More from both candidates can be found in the audio from Wednesday night’s forum that can be found with this story on our website. Carroll Broadcasting will continue bringing you updates on the candidates in upcoming broadcasts.
