Iowa National Guard To Demonstrate Unmanned Aircraft At Boone Airport Wednesday

The Iowa Army National Guard will be launching an unmanned aircraft during a flight demonstration tomorrow (Wednesday), Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. at the Boone Municipal Airport. While the Iowa Air National Guard’s 132nd Wing currently flies MQ-9 Reaper Remotely Piloted Aircraft overseas in combat theaters, Wednesday’s demonstration features the smaller RQ-7B Shadow, which increases their capabilities by providing real-time reconnaissance, relaying communications and assisting in target acquisition. The over 11 foot long aircraft is launched from a 40-foot rail launcher which is pressurized by nitrogen and hydraulics, and once airborne, is controlled through ground data terminals via radio frequencies. The Shadow has a 15 foot wingspan, a range of 77 miles and a maximum endurance of six hours. The Shadow crew consists of a 28-soldier platoon, with a platoon leader, two warrant officers, 16 officers and nine maintainers.
