IKM-Manning Graduate Helping Students At ISU As Peer Mentor

Iowa State University has announced that Trevor Blankman of Manning will be serving in his second year as a Peer Mentor for the National Resource Ecology Management Transitions Learning Community. Blankman, who is a senior majoring in Animal Ecology with an emphasis on fisheries, said his role is to help new students further their education and become acclimated to life at ISU.

There are 20 different Learning Communities just in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at ISU that have been active for 20 years. Blankman is one of a group of approximately 150 mentors in that program who have provided advice and assistance to students in a variety of areas, but Blankman said there is one that he addresses with nearly all of the new students. He added he has already seen it quite a few times in his first few sessions of this school year.

Blankman’s advice to new students and those that will be coming in next year aligns with what he has learned as a peer mentor.

He is not only helping others learn through this program, he is also gaining experience and skills in project management, leadership and group and interpersonal communication. Blankman graduated from IKM-Manning High School in 2013. He is the son of Jim and Paula Blankman of Manning and has two younger brothers: Nathan, 15 and Isaac, 9. After graduation next spring, he is hoping his studies will assist him with employment at a state agency or the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
