Free Compost To Be Given Away Saturday At Carroll County Landfill

On Saturday, Oct. 15, the Carroll County Solid Waste Management Commission will be offering free compost to Carroll County homeowners interested in using it in their flower beds or vegetable gardens. Director, Mary Wittry said they offered the free compost in April of this year, and have gotten great feedback about the benefits of its application.

There are different types of organic matter composting, and Wittry said theirs is comprised from primarily vegetative matter.

Wittry said the commission decided a fall event would allow homeowners to apply the compost for absorption over the winter. There is a limited timeframe for picking up the free compost between 8 and 10 a.m.

The compost is available on a first-come, first-served basis and Wittry said it is not packaged or bagged in any way. She said the best way to pick up the compost is in a truck bed or trailer. She said people will bring trash containers and they can load those, but the larger capacity methods are the easiest as the product is loaded with a skid loader bucket. There is a two bucket limit per visitor. For more information, contact Carroll County Solid Waste Management at 792-5001.
