Drake Relays Go Green

The Drake Relays got underway this past Wednesday with top high school athletes and the best collegiate and Olympic performers from across the nation and around the world gathering at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. And though blue may be the home-field collegiate colors, the relays are running green this year, with MidAmerican Energy offsetting 100 percent of the electricity used during the event with wind energy. Drake University is using renewable energy certificates donated by MidAmerican for energy use from the Pomeroy wind farm located in Pocahontas and Calhoun Counties. “It’s a big deal for the Drake Relays and Drake University to be a clean energy event,” said Brian Brown, relay director. “Every year, we challenge our partners and ourselves to continue to make the relays one of the most unique events in the world, and this is meeting that challenge.”  The Drake Relays will be wrapping up the final rounds of races tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.
