Connecticut Gov. Malloy Heads Roundtable On Gun Control At National Governors’ Meeting

Gov. Dan Malloy, a Democrat from Connecticut, is one of the approximately 25 governors who have traveled to Iowa for the National Governor’s Association meetings getting underway today (Thursday). He says the group will be touching on many different issues the states are facing, including the recent shootings in Orlando, Minnesota, Louisiana and Dallas.

Gov. Malloy says this discussion needs to take place because the ubiquitous/universal nature of guns are making police officers leery of even a simple approach to another person. A proponent of more stringent gun-control measures, Malloy says most Americans are unaware that nearly 40 percent of guns change hands without any records kept or background checks conducted. He will be participating in a roundtable today on this subject.

He also wants to see a call for stricter laws in securing and storage of weapons, particularly around children.

After the Sandy Hook shootings of 20 children and seven adults in Newtown, Conn. in 2012, Malloy led the state in implementing those steps in 2013 by banning the sale of certain types of weapons and high-capacity magazines. They toughened laws on storage of weapons and made all weapon sales, even those on the internet, subject to background checks.

Gov. Malloy stresses that these are common-sense steps that Hillary Clinton supports, but Donald Trump does not.

Other topics Malloy says the governors will cover during their meetings include cybersecurity, healthcare cost containment and food sustainability on a national and international basis. Gov. Malloy is also co-chair of the Council of Governors, a panel of five Democratic and five Republican governors who will hold private meetings in the next two days. The council oversees the state’s relations with the Department of Defense, particularly with the National Guard and Reserves.
