Congressman Young Suspending His Own Pay

Iowa’s Third District Republican representative, Congressman Dave Young, penned a letter to the Iowan’s he serves yesterday (Thursday) saying that he will be asking for a suspension in his pay. Young says one of the first pieces of legislation he introduced to Congress was a resolution stating, “Congress should pass no law that would exempt it from its obligations or provide any other special consideration to elected or appointed Federal officials or any other Federal employee.” He has also twice co-sponsored legislation commonly referred to as “No Budget, No Pay.” By law, Congress is required to pass a budget by April 15 of each year, and Young says this requirement is often ignored. As Iowan’s know, “If you don’t do your job, you don’t get paid,” Young said, and this bill upholds that premise. Young sent a letter to the House Chief Administrative Officer, requesting that his pay be withheld from Saturday, April 16, until the House agrees to a budget resolution or the last day of the 114th Congress, just as is called for in the No Budget, No Pay language he supported with his co-sponsorship and vote.
