CHS STAR Class Sucessfully Launches and Recovers Science Equipment

There was a strange object seen traversing the Carroll skies this morning, but it was no reason to become alarmed. Students enrolled in the STEM Training and Research (STAR) class at Carroll High School released a weather balloon as part of CHS’s continued efforts to make Science, Technology, Engineering and Math subjects fun for students this morning around 9 a.m. Students in the class developed the plan from start to finish. From ordering the parts to assembling the data collecting devices, the STAR students had the chance to see what a true-to-life science career would be like. Weather balloons can reach as high 24 miles above the Earth’s surface in the stratosphere almost halfway to space. Outer space is usually considered to begin at 62 miles above sea level. The class placed trackers on the balloon and recovered the returning equipment 36 miles away near Dawson after the balloon burst around noon on Friday. Video of the students launching the balloon can be found on the CHS Facebook page by following the link included with this story below.
