CCSD To Purchase Property Insurance Coverage Beginning Jan. 1

The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Directors unanimously approved to accept a bid for property insurance from Specialty Underwriters earlier this week. The bid for one year of coverage came in at $173,174, and 93 percent of that total comes from technology protection. CCSD has a one-to-one computer ratio for students from 12th grade to elementary aged students, and this high number of computers results in increased insurance costs. Gary Bengtson, Director of Business Affairs, says the district will benefit from the plan based on the number of repairs they make each year.

The coverage, scheduled to begin Jan 1, 2017, will include other equipment, such as walk-in freezers and lifts. Bengston says the costs are calculated on a variety of factors.

The policy lasts a calendar year, but it will be reviewed again in July 2017 to potentially lower the costs. If the board chooses to continue coverage at that time, the coverage would be extended six months to fall in line with the district’s fiscal year. The policy will not cover equipment like HVAC or any vehicle using a gasoline-powered engine.
