Carroll Middle School teachers awarded classroom STEM Grants

Two Carroll Middle School Teachers have been awarded STEM Grants. The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math grant awards, says Middle School Principal Jerry Raymond, ties into the school’s core curriculum and builds upon student skills.

5th grade Teacher Patty Mishark was awarded a STEM Connections Grant through the Science Center of Iowa. Mishark says the grant will provide her classroom with a preassembled Makey-Makey kit.

An Engineering and Elementary Award was presented to 6th grade Teacher Jodi Handlos which coincides with next generation science standards. Handlos will receive a stipend in order to select a hands-on kit.

Professional development training will be provided as part of the grant award to both Mishark and Handlos which will guide them on how to best implement their respective programs in their classrooms beginning next year. Raymond also credits Middle School Instructional Coach Ann Kluver and Middle School Teacher Tonia Onken for their help with the grant applications. The school was notified of the awards earlier this month, but the exact grant amounts are still unknown as an expected official award letter has yet to arrive.
