Carroll County Has No Pending Property Value Assessment Appeals

Carroll County Attorney, John Werden, has announced that this year will mark the first in several recent years there are no pending property valuation assessment appeals for Carroll County. These cases arise when a taxpayer appeals the Carroll County Assessor’s property valuation. Their case is then heard by the county Conference Board. If not satisfied with the judgment of that board, the taxpayer may appeal to the State of Iowa Property Assessment Appeal Board and on to the judicial branch. Werden has reported that the last seven high-value appeals involved five properties: Waltrust properties, or Walgreens was seeking an $863,680 decrease; Carrollton Inn, Inc. who was pursuing an over $1,067,000 decrease in valuation; Sears Holding and Management Corp.’s Kmart location, seeking over $623,000 in lowered assessments ; Citicentre Station, HyVee, with a request to drop from just shy of a $3 million valuation to a little over $2,320,000; and EYM King of Des Moines, LLC, operating as Burger King who was seeking a value reduction of over $246,000. The seven appeals, that spanned the tax years 2013 through 2015, have all been resolved with no reduction in the original value set by Carroll County officials. None of the taxpayers pursued appeals after the orders of the State of Iowa Property Assessment Appeal Board called for dismissal.
