Carroll Caucus goers rally behind candidates; Democratic race a nail-biter

During Monday night’s Iowa Democratic Caucuses voters turned out to support their candidates from all across the state. It was no different for voters of Carroll’s Ward 4 which saw a large number of attendees who were, unsurprisingly, first time caucus goers. Most first timers were present to show their support for Senator Bernie Sanders like college student Nichole Zimmerle.

Keith Cook, who caucused 8 years ago, says he’s still learning about Sanders, but decided to support him for one particular reason.

On the other side of the aisle it’s been a long time since Connie Boeing attended a caucus, but she says Hillary Clinton’s stance on healthcare, social security, and immigration mirror her beliefs and she believes Clinton will get things done.

Over the weekend Boeing was able to attend Clinton’s campaign rally in Carroll, and fellow first time caucus goer Sandra Schulze was also in attendance. Schulze says prior to the rally she hasn’t really participated in anything political before.

As the caucus goers from Carroll’s 4th Ward settled in to be counted a slight numbers snafu had to first be sorted out. 90 people were counted present, but on paper only 89 people had signed in. It turns out a newly registered voter had missed signing in on the official list, but had otherwise followed proper procedures. Once it had been all sorted out, and all attendees stood with a viable candidate, Clinton had 50 supporters, receiving 7 delegate votes, while Sanders had 40 supporters, receiving 5 delegate votes. As of late Monday night, all of Iowa and the rest of the country, were left biting their nails as the Democratic race was deemed too close to call with over 90% of Iowa’s precincts reporting in; the difference between the two candidates stood, at times, at less than a difference of 1% for a majority of the night.
