Bad News For Newspapers

It is bad news for the newspaper industry as recent reports by the Pew Research Center and the Bureau of Labor and Statistics highlight the steady decline of the print medium. Employment statistics show a dramatic decrease in the number of people employed in newspaper publishing from 458,000 in 1990, down to only 183,000 a quarter of a century later. The Pew study looked at the changes in the way readers are getting their news, and reports that just in 2015, the industry dropped another seven percent in circulation, the largest decline since 2010, and ad revenues decreased by eight percent. Age of readers does not seem to dramatically impact the steady declines in readership either. Eighteen to 34 year old readers dropped by an estimated 16 percent, as did those 65 and older. The greatest drop was seen in baby boomers in the 55 to 64 age range at a 31 percent decrease, followed closely behind by the 45 to 54 year olds dropping down by 25 percent and the 35 to 44 year old readers with an attrition rate of 22 percent. So where is all of the focus going? Over the same time period, the number of internet publishing positions skyrocketed from 30,000 in 1990, to an estimated 198,000 in 2015.
