As Temps Remain Low, Risk Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Rises

As the temperatures throughout Iowa remain low, the risk of a winter killer rises—carbon monoxide poisoning. This is an odorless, colorless toxic gas that is created any time carbon-based fuels are burned. Because it can’t be seen, smelled or tasted, many are overcome by carbon monoxide before realizing they have even been exposed. More than 20,000 people will seek medical treatment for exposure and 4,000 of them will be hospitalized. Four hundred will die. MidAmerican Energy Company reminds customers to be aware of the warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, which include: flu-like symptoms without the accompanying fever; vomiting, drowsiness, mental confusion and loss of muscular coordination; loss of consciousness, convulsions and cardiac or respiratory failure. If you suspect poisoning, get outside into fresh air immediately and call 911. All homes should have at least one Underwriters Laboratories approved CO detector installed and an annual check of the heating system and other fuel burning appliances should be conducted as precautions. Never operate portable generators inside homes or garages. For more safety tips, visit MidAmerican Energy’s website at www.midamericanenergy.com.
