Area Law Enforcement Stepping Up Presence Through Labor Day

As summer officially winds down this coming Labor Day weekend, people will be out in large numbers on the state’s roadways, travelling to celebrate the final days of the season. Area law enforcement officials, including the Carroll and Jefferson Police Departments and the Carroll and Greene County Sheriff’s Offices, will also be out in increased numbers on the state’s roads from now until Monday, Sept. 5, working to prevent accidents and save lives. Almost one-third of all accident fatalities in the U.S. involve drunk drivers, and that means an average of 10,00 people have died needlessly every year since 2010, with a death recorded nearly every 43 minutes. In 2014, 40 percent of the fatal crashes involved drunk drivers, which is the highest percentage in over five years. In contrast, one simple measure is the single most effective means for drivers or passengers to protect themselves in the event of an accident, and that is to buckle their seatbelt. A report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that seat belts save over 13,000 lives per year, which is more than the population in many of Iowa’s communities. Iowa’s law enforcement officials urge everyone to celebrate responsibly this coming Labor Day weekend, and every day throughout the year, by buckling up and refraining from driving when drinking. Working together is the only way we can keep Iowans safe on our roads.
