31 Iowa Counties Now Infested With Emerald Ash Borer

A new infestation of Emerald Ash Borer in Winneshiek County brings the total Iowa counties with confirmed infestations to 31. This past Friday, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced the destructive pest, native to Asia has been discovered in Decorah. A consulting arborist was drawn to a tree in the town after noticing evidence of damage. Further investigation revealed distinctive S-shaped galleries and larva underneath the bark of the infested tree. The larva was collected and sent to the USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory, where it was confirmed positive for Emerald Ash Borer. Last month, Emerald Ash Borer was found on the University of Iowa campus. At this time, the window for preventative treatments remains closed. The State of Iowa will continue to track the movement of Emerald Ash Borer on a county-by-county basis.
