Stewart Memorial Community Hospital Adds 3D Mammography

Stewart Memorial Community Hospital is introducing a valuable new service for women with the addition of 3D mammography. Mary Reiter, radiology director says they expect to see an increase in the number of area women who will be routinely screened. The mammography system provides more comprehensive baseline screening, especially for women who have dense breast tissue or have a personal history of breast cancer. The new Selenia Dimensions breast tomosynthesis system offers sharp breast images and an ergonomic design, offering more patient comfort for all breast types. Three-D technology has a 40 percent higher invasive cancer detection rate than conventional 2D mammography alone and provides radiologists with increased confidence and up to a 40 percent reduction in recall rates. During the exam, multiple low-dose images of the breast are acquired from different angles. The images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast. Reiter said routine mammograms are critical in early detection and treatment of breast cancer. The stage at which cancer is detected has a tremendous influence on their chances of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent. For more information or to schedule a screening, contact Stewart Memorial Community Hospital at 712-464-4207.
