Seventeen Drake Students Take To The Manning Streets For Research

Manning was one of six cities that submitted grant applications to work in tandem with Drake University and the Iowa Economic Authority on a Downtown Economic Development Pilot Program beginning this year. Only two communities were accepted for the program, Perry and Manning, and as one part of the overall project, 27 members of the senior public relations class at Drake will be touring, studying and implementing a variety of research tools as the initial phases of a class project. This past Friday, 17 members of that class converged on Manning with their instructors, Matt Thornton and Maria Rohach. Thornton, an assistant professor in the school of journalism and mass communications explained the students’ role in the project.

These students were given the opportunity to learn more with some guidance from local leaders.

The 27 students have been broken out into six or seven small groups to work on individual areas of interest.

The culmination of the project will come next spring when the students present the city of Manning with a fully-fledged public relations campaign that the city can implement if so desired. In addition to this project, Drake will assist Manning in evaluating lodging needs, promotion of a sense of place to draw tourists, residents and businesses and web/social media development.
