Phone scammers target Carroll & surrounding areas as weather gets cold

The Carroll Police Department is alerting all area residents to be aware of a phone scam which is hitting the region. Reports indicate a person, or persons, are identifying themselves as an employee of MidAmerican Energy and are calling homes to inform the occupants they are behind on their bills. The caller then states that if the resident wishes to keep their power on they will need to send money to a specified address by Western Union or via some other form.

Carroll Police Chief Brad Burke says MidAmerican will never call a household requesting money and if you receive a call like this one you should hang up. He adds that you should never give out any private information about yourself to a suspicious caller or forward money to any individual requesting it over the phone or by email. When in doubt hang up and call MidAmerican’s customer service line directly to inquire about the status of your account.
