Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Introduced At Linking Families & Communities

June training for professionals from Linking Families and Communities of Fort Dodge is already being implemented in their day-to-day operations. Carroll Broadcasting News Director, Chantelle Grove reports.

 

Executive Director Elizabeth Stanek says attending the Unitypoint Berryhill Center, Children and Families of Iowa and Families First parent-child interactions therapy training provided them with the tools they need to assist families in the Webster, Calhoun, and Pocahontas areas. Stanek said it is estimated that between nine and a half and 14.2% of children from birth to five years old experience emotional or behavioral disturbances. The investment of $37,000 for the training has already resulted in 12 area children receiving parent-child interactions therapy. that places emphasis on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing the parent-child relationship patterns. Parents are taught specific skill to establish a nurturing and secure relationship with their child while increasing their trials prosocial behavior and decreasing the negative. The treatment focuses on two basic interactions child-directed interaction which is similar to play therapy and parent directed interaction and which parents learn to use specific behavior management techniques as they play with a child.
