Merchants Park Demolition Completed Without A Hitch

Carroll’s 28E agreement for the use of prison labor from North Central Correctional Facility in Rockwell City was put to great use as the demolition portion of the renovation project at Merchants Park Stadium in Carroll was completed recently. Parks and Recs Director, Jack Wardell said this worked out flawlessly for the city, the Carroll Athletic Association and the workers themselves.

The workers were on site for 15, seven-to-eight hour days at a cost of only $190 a day. Barry Bruner said he wanted to recognize the donors and the volunteers who put in a lot of their free time to oversee the demolition and act as communication conduits between the workers, the city and the athletic association. Ed Lawler was one of the volunteers who went above and beyond.

Lawler said the workers enjoyed being here, and everyone was pleased with the work they did. In addition to the demolition, they hand-dug trenches for tile under the grandstand where equipment could not reach. It is Lawler’s hope, and that of everyone else, that the work done will be reflected in a lower bid next time around.

Wardell said that Shive-Hattery, the architectural consulting firm, will redo the plans in November and December and the project will be put back out to bid, hopefully, in January.
