Investigation Into Harreld’s Selection As UI President Concludes

A report released to the media today (Thursday) from the American Association of University Professors provided results from an investigation into the search process leading to the selection of Bruce Harreld as University of Iowa President. The association says from the onset the search was structured to identify a figure from the business world and prevented any meaningful faculty role in the selection of the final candidate through the “illusion” of an open, honest search. Their stance is that Harreld was appointed over three other candidates who were more qualified. Though the report portrays the search as nothing less than a crude exercise in naked power, it concludes, “We believe that it would better serve the interests of faculty and the university to take [President Harreld] at his word while also being vigilant and prepared to act to maintain academic integrity and shared governance.” Harreld said he had no comments to add to the draft report, but going forward would continue to respect and engage in the shared governance of the institution.
