IKM-Manning Students Take Part In STEM Event Tuesday

Students in Kindergarten through sixth grade at IKM-Manning Community Schools will be getting hands-on experience with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math during a special STEM event from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22. Elementary and Middle School Principal, Sharon Whitson, said this is a valuable learning opportunity for the students.

The business participants were drawn from the communities of Irwin, Kirkman, Manilla and Manning first, but will also include booths of organizations and businesses from Carroll and even Des Moines. Students will see a drone, a bike that generates electricity, participate in veterinary lab work, learn about pharmaceutical procedures and customer service and even how to calculate the amount of color needed to dye plastic during production.

Whitson added this is not only an opportunity for kids to learn, but also a way to help bolster partnerships and demonstrate how students can build industries in our communities. She added this is an exciting format for the students.

Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds was originally scheduled to attend the event, but is now unable to be present. Whitson said the kids will get to meet Ryan Wise, who is the administrator for the Department of Education. She is hoping that the Lt. Governor will be available for their next STEM event on Jan. 19.
