Free Car Seat Check Up! event this Saturday in Carroll

Doesn’t using a car seat for your child automatically make them safer while riding in a vehicle? Not necessarily. Over 75% of child car seats in use in Carroll County are being used incorrectly. This Saturday you can find out if yours could be one of them through a free Child Seat Safety Check. Since 1997 certified technician Jody Brincks has been scrutinizing the installation of child seats and says there are some very common mistakes.

Brincks, his wife Cheryl, and at least fifteen other certified technicians will be on hand to inspect a car seat’s installation and also look for any potential problems.

Their goal is to make sure everyone is safer than when they came in and technicians come armed with recall lists, a latch manual, they commonly referred to as the “seat check bible,” and many other tools.

If possible children should accompany their parents to the event so technicians can give the most accurate advice possible. Brincks adds there are some other things attendees should know.

On average it takes between 15 to 20 minutes to check each child seat thoroughly. Technicians can also help parents determine whether older children are ready to sit in a vehicle without one. The free event, sponsored by the Carroll Kiwanis and the Iowa Safe Kids Coalition, will take place this Saturday, September 26, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in the east parking lot of the Carroll County Courthouse. Vehicles are asked to enter from the west. Car seat checks are also available by appointment if you can’t make it to the event. Leave a message at 712-792-0314.
