Energy crews prepare to trim neighboorhood trees before winter hits

Before the snow starts to fly crews with MidAmerican Energy will be out trimming trees in order to improve the reliability of service this winter. Up to 10% of all electrical outages are caused by falling trees or branches due to high winds or heavy snowfall and MidAmerican Energy manager of vegetation management, Jason Ewers, says while the goal is to provide safe and reliable electric service the company is also committed to taking the best care of the trees they trim and minimize the negative impacts to a tree’s health.

Contracted companies hired by MidAmerican Energy to perform the work are supervised by the International Society of arboriculture-certified arborist and also specialize in tree trimming around utilities. Ewers says crews take into account the type of tree, its anticipated growth pattern, its relation to the overhead lines, the tree’s overall health, and its movement in the wind before any trimming is done. Tree Line USA utility has recognized MidAmerican Energy as a company which demonstrates practices that protect and enhance America’s urban forests since 2001. Residents will be notified by mail approximately three weeks prior to when work will begin in their neighborhood. If a customer is concerned about trees near power lines on their property they can call 888-427-5632 or email MidAmerican Energy at trees@midamerican.com.
