Consumer Confidence In Farming Increasing

The Iowa Food and Family Project conducted their annual Consumer Pulse poll last month and surveyed 351 Iowans about their opinions regarding a variety of food and farming topics. The majority of respondents were female, affluent, highly educated and make the majority of their household’s food purchases. Now in its fourth year, the survey showed continued improvement on how food-minded Iowans perceive today’s farming practices, their knowledge of how food is grown and self-assessed interest in learning more about what farmers do. In this time of heightened awareness, the survey revealed that shoppers remain confident in the trustworthiness of farmers. Eighty-four percent reported a positive impression of farming, which was the highest in the survey’s history. Nearly three quarters of respondents ranked farmers as doing a good to great job in caring for livestock and more than half–56 percent–ranked farmers near the top on a five-point ranking scale on their commitment to animal care, environmental stewardship and the overall impression of the job farmers do. In addition, while shopping, consumers are paying more attention to how their food is grown with 96 percent of respondents considering themselves knowledgeable, while three quarters find food labels helpful, with the most positive response to labels identifying the product as local.
