Changing of the guard: CCSD school board elects Horsley as new board president

A changing of the guard took place at the Carroll School Board during an annual meeting on Monday night. Retiring members were recognized and given a plaque provided by the Iowa School Board Association in recognition of their years of service. Retiring members included Dan Tiefenthaler who has served for 4 years, LaVern Dirkx for 10 years of service, and Kim Tiefenthaler who has served on the board for 16 years with six of those years as school board president. Departing members said their farewells and exited the board room, and following the new members, Gina Badding, Brad Jorgensen, and Jon Sampson, were all sworn in. As their first order of business they sought to elect a new CCSD board president. Badding was the first to make a nomination for Board Member Jen Munson. Munson, accepted the nomination, but felt the position was a natural fit for Board Member Duane Horsley.

Sampson and Badding voiced they were comfortable with either candidate along with Jorgensen who added:

Munson then nominated Horsley who was unanimously approved as Board President of the Carroll Community School District. For the role of Vice President Sampson nominated Munson who was also unanimously approved. Appointments of board members were also made to various committees: including Sampson and Jorgenson who will serve on the Transportation Committee, Munson and Jorgenson for the School Improvement Team, Badding will serve as the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) Legislative Network Liaison and Delegate while Horsley will serve as an IASB alternate delegate. Sampson was designated to serve on the County Conference Board, Munson on the Calendar Fact-Finding Committee, and Horsley and Badding will serve on the Negotiations Teams during official interactions with the CEA and CESA. Affirmative Action Coordinators had previously been designated and include High School Principal Tammie McKenzie and Gary Bengston as an Alternate. The school board will continue to hold their meetings at Adams Elementary School at 6:00 pm on the third Monday of each month.
