Carroll Co. Public Health reports nasal mist flu vaccine in short supply

A recent flu immunization clinic at Kuemper Catholic School really drove home the point that it’s important to get vaccinated for the flu even if you have to be poked with a needle. Clinic Coordinator for Carroll County Public Health, Julie Town says many people prefer the nasal flu-mist instead of the injectable shot. However, this season the clinic won’t be able to guarantee that they’ll have the flu-mist in stock, as they ran out during Kuemper’s clinic, due to a supply shortage.

At the beginning of the flu season the clinic ordered 400 doses of the flu-mist, but only received 150 of those requested. Town says if you’re thinking about holding off on getting a flu shot – in hopes of receiving a nasal mist – it is not recommended.

The Iowa Department of Public Health has already confirmed positive cases of flu in Carroll County this season. Town says the good news is those confirmed cases match flu strains included in this year’s vaccines so people who get the flu shot will be less likely to get sick.
