AAA Predicts Record Travel For Memorial Day Weekend

AAA projects a record 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the Memorial Day weekend, marking a slight increase from the 44.8 million travelers recorded last year. According to AAA, 39.1 million travelers are expected to drive to their destinations, setting a new Memorial Day weekend record for automobile travel. Another 3.66 million people are projected to fly domestically, while 2.2 million are expected to travel by bus, train or cruise ship. AAA said drivers will face higher gasoline prices compared to last Memorial Day, when the national average for regular unleaded fuel was $3.17 per gallon. However, average domestic airfare is down about six percent for travelers who booked early, with roundtrip tickets averaging about $800. AAA also urged motorists to check vehicle maintenance and drive safely during the busy holiday weekend.
