Carroll County EMA Director Jeff Cullen Encourages Readiness During National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, and Carroll County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Cullen says it reminds everyone to be ready for an emergency, whether natural or man-made. According to Cullen, readiness is often overlooked by most people.

Cullen adds that there are many situations in Iowa that can lead to a household being on its own for a few days, such as long-duration winter storms, flooding, or power outages. The general recommendation is that each household have at least three to five days of essentials in their home at all times.

Cullen says another critical part of emergency preparedness is staying informed, whether through a weather radio, local media, or other means. In 2014, the state launched Alert Iowa to notify Iowans who have registered. He recommends Iowans have multiple notification methods, but Alert Iowa is near the top of his list.

Carroll County residents can sign up easily by texting CARROLLIA to 672-83. Alert Iowa is available in every county within the Carroll Broadcasting listening area, and users can register at www.smart911.com. Cullen says having all the pieces in place ahead of time is crucial, but it is just as important to act on that information quickly.

Cullen says nobody wants to be left wishing they had planned ahead, and there is no time like the present. Those who want help putting together preparedness kits and plans are encouraged to contact Cullen using the information included with this story on our website.
